Niki Collier works at the intersection of art and performance. Her practice is known for its bold use of scale and interactivity, designed to spark empathy and provoke inspiration.
Symbols of Mobility is an ambitious, multidisciplinary project that explores mobility not only as physical movement but as transformation — of identity, of place, and of perspective. Each story of wings featured in the exhibition has been developed over several years through collaborative projects. The works highlight a range of voices — from a dancer with a disability, to a Ukrainian refugee, to performers of diverse ethnic backgrounds, including members of the Bulgarian community in Ireland.
Symbols of Mobility was described by Maureen Kennelly, the Director of Arts Council, as work embracing art, craft and activism as a strong storytelling intersection to hold messages we all have so many questions about. The work captures her vision that present past and future are in constant dialogue.
What makes this exhibition especially compelling is the way it draws inspiration from age-old stories — folk tales, bird legends, proverbs, and cultural traditions — reinterpreted through the lived experiences of individuals who embody the many dimensions of mobility.
In her opening speech the Her Excellency Vanya Andreeva-Malakova, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to Ireland said:
“When people from different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives come together, something meaningful happens. Through her work, Niki encourages us to embrace difference, foster empathy, and engage in open dialogue — to build fairer, more inclusive communities where everyone feels they belong, have a voice, and contribute equally. I believe art lovers will find in this exhibition a truly innovative approach to both material and meaning — and an invitation to reflect on the challenges we face.”
The exhibition is curated in the Shorelines Festival.
