Cruinníu na nÓg 2023 @ Richmond Barracks, St Michael’s Estate, Inchicore, Dublin, D08 YY05
This is a celebration of 6 months engagement with the Bulgarian Community exploring bird lore and craft.
The boys and girls tried basketmaking, weaving, macrame, knitting and heard fairytales, songs and stories about Irish and Bulgarian Craft, birds and community. Got the chance to tell them about the basket maker Joe Hogan.
On Saturday, we showed off our work and play with 150cm balls.
The event kicks off at 10am with special guest
Dr. Nusha Yonkova, Principal Officer at the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission
and
Liz Coman from Arts Office Dublin
We made landscapes of the motherland with the children. We talked about the homeland. What is the place that is homeland? What we see out the window now? or what we saw in the photographer’s exhibition “I don’t know his name bro???”
Weaving turned out to be a challenge for us. Some threads got intertwined, some panels unraveled and there was not even time left for a story.
Niki shared: “Weaving also showed me the strong character of the children – they were ready to try different approaches to the work. And even if they did not agree with all the steps I showed. Well done! Future innovators are growing among us!”
As we played with the kids and several parents joined the gathering. As with all our projects, people helped Nicky prepare everything and then Nicky helped them weave. At the weaving loom we heard stories about grandmothers, mothers and aunts. Let’s share our gratitude to grandmother Ana, Sasho’s grandmother and her grandmother Velika, Niki’s grandmother, who instilled in us a love for textile art and Bulgarian culture.
This part of the project is on line – parents are human too.
